🌿 Refreshing Grass Jelly Brown Sugar Milk 🌿

Grass Jelly Brown Sugar Milk is a delightful and straightforward beverage crafted from milk, brown sugar, and tender grass jelly. 🤤 Notably, it contains no caffeine, making it a soothing alternative to iced teas and coffees.

For those unfamiliar, grass jelly is a gelatinous substance made from boiled Chinese mesona plant, starch, and potassium carbonate. Though its flavour is not very strong on its own, it offers a subtle herbal undertone, commonly featured in Southeast Asian desserts and beverages.

This homemade drink is effortlessly whipped up with minimal ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • 1 can grass jelly
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Ice cubes
  • 4 cups milk (or your favourite plant-based alternative)

Instructions (Makes 4 Servings):

  1. Prepare the Grass Jelly:
    • Carefully transfer the grass jelly from the can onto a cutting board. Slice the jelly into little cubes and transfer to a bowl.
  2. Make the Brown Sugar Syrup:
    • In a small saucepan, add the brown sugar and whisk in the water. Bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer to reduce to a thick syrup.
  3. Combine Ingredients:
    • Pour half of your brown sugar syrup into the bowl of grass jelly, keeping the other half to garnish the glasses.
    • Spoon some of the grass jelly into a tall glass, then add some ice topped off with more grass jelly.
    • Using a spoon, pour some syrup along the walls of the glass to create a marble effect (optional).
    • Layer with more grass jelly and ice.
    • Pour 1 cup milk over top (per glass) and serve.
