What Is Asia? A Beginner’s Guide to the World’s Largest and Most Diverse Continent

Melissa da Costa

When you hear the word "Asia," what comes to mind? Sushi? K-pop? Cherry blossoms? Spicy noodles? The truth is—Asia is all that… and so much more.

Whether you’re a foodie, a culture lover, or just a curious explorer, understanding what Asia actually is will open up a whole new world of flavours, stories, and traditions. Let’s dive into the basics together.

🗺️ Where Is Asia, Anyway?

Asia is the largest continent on Earth, both in land area and population. It covers about 30% of the planet’s land and is home to over 4.7 billion people—that’s more than half of everyone on Earth!

But here’s something many people forget:

🌍 Asia isn't just Korea, Japan, China, or Thailand. It also includes places like Russia, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, and parts of what is often referred to as the Middle East.

🧭 How Is Asia Defined Geographically?

Asia is part of the massive Eurasian landmass, and it shares a continent with Europe. The two are technically one big piece of land, but are separated based on cultural and historical distinctions, as well as geographical boundaries.

📍 Generally, Asia is defined as stretching from:

  • The Ural Mountains and Ural River in Russia (which form the boundary with Europe)
  • Across the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea
  • All the way to the Pacific Ocean in the east
  • And from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south

So yes—about 77% of Russia’s landmass is in Asia, even though it’s often culturally associated with Europe!

Other lesser-known Asian territories include:

  • West Asian (a less Eurocentric term than "Middle Eastern") countries — e.g. Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
  • Cyprus is located in West Asia, but it is politically and culturally European
  • Approximately 97% of Turkey's land is in Asia

📚 Where Did the Word “Asia” Come From?

Unlike continents like Australia (a single landmass with natural boundaries), the idea of "Asia" as a continent is more cultural and historical than geological.

The name Asia dates back to Ancient Greece. It’s believed to come from the Ancient Greek word "Ἀσία" (Asía)—a name originally used by Greek writers like Herodotus to describe the lands east of their own territory, starting with Anatolia (modern-day Turkey).

But here's the twist:
👉 The Greeks used Asia vaguely—first for coastal regions under Persian rule, and only much later to describe an entire landmass.
👉 So in the beginning, Asia meant “the place where the sun rises” — as in East of Greece 🌅

In other words, "Asia" was named from a Western point of view—making it an exonym, not an identity formed from within the region itself.
